SUSTAINABILITY

Through the activities undertaken in SERC, we support sustainable solutions by restoring eco-systems, revitalizing soil, combatting climate change and restoring local value. The project is pre-registered with the UN FCCC’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). It is anticipated that the formal approval process will be completed by the end of 2022. After that, the project will be able to generate revenue over the next 60 years or so, from the global carbon market. The way this works, the removal of the greenhouse gas CO2 from the atmosphere, through storage as biomass by the trees planted in the project, will offset emissions of CO2 by those who participate in the market at the end other end.
The price of a tonnes of carbon fluctuates considerably, but with a marked increase over time. A tonnes of carbon was priced at 25 USD in the European market, as of mid-2019, as compared to only about 3 USD a year earlier. Late 2021 it had risen above 70 USD in the European market. Internationally, market conditions are still evolving, but much increased prices are expected in the coming years.
Many other aspects are critical for ensuring sustainability, such as treating and managing the soil for long term generation, and through the promotion of bio-diversity and an environment of healthy micro-organisms.
At the level of society and the economy, people need to experience that the forest generates benefits. Apart from recreation, food, and so forth, further value can be created for the Dhofar region, as for other regions, by connecting it to eco-tourism and associated experience-based industries, that can help create jobs and enable entrepreneurial activities.
